‘Dean of Insurance’ Bob Ross passes away

NOVEMBER 13, 2012—One of Florida’s most influential insurance voices has gone silent with the passing of Robert Ross, Jr., on November 9, 2012, following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Orange, NJ, Bob served his country as a naval aviator during WWII. He graduated from Dartmouth University in 1945.
Bob Ross came up through the ranks, starting his insurance career, first as an adjuster and, later special agent, with the American Insurance Company. He moved from the company side of the spectrum to the agency side, working at the Baldwin Insurance Agency as vice president; the Daniel Insurance Agency as manager and, later, partner; and the Ross, Lombard & Ballard Insurance, Inc., as president. He became FAIA’s president of the Board in 1965.
In 1974, he joined FAIA as director of Education, a position he held until his retirement. His insurance prowess earned him the designation “Dean of Insurance.” He set the standard for insurance educators.
He will be laid to rest today, Tuesday, October 13, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 8th Ave., 7th Fl., New York, NY 10001, or Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 4665 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, FL 32309.
